What is a Friendship Lunch?

The Friendship Lunches are part of a wonderful community programme called Music Makes Memories, held at venues all over Sheffield. Each one gives you a friendly, relaxed afternoon out, with a delicious two-course lunch, live entertainment and sing-along favourites, plenty of conversation and laughter, and the chance to meet new friends in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

They are designed for older people who would like to socialise, enjoy good company and make happy memories. They are also dementia-friendly, which makes them ideal for people living with dementia and for their families and carers, so nobody has to worry about going along. It is simply a lovely afternoon out, open to everyone who fancies one.

Why they matter

Regular social contact makes an enormous difference to older people's wellbeing. A shared meal and a good laugh lift the spirits, keep people connected to their community, and give a real shape and highlight to the week. For anyone who has been feeling isolated, that friendly face and familiar table can mean a great deal.

The dementia-friendly welcome matters too. Too often, families worry that a loved one living with dementia will not manage a day out, or that they will feel out of place. At a Friendship Lunch, everyone belongs, which is why they are such a valuable part of the local scene, and a lovely way to mark occasions like World Alzheimer's Day.

Where and when

Friendship Lunches run at venues right across the city, most on a regular day each month, so there is very often one happening near you.

Other venues host lunches on varying dates, including Basecamp Café, Malin Bridge; Oak House Restaurant, Chapeltown (0114 245 5536); Cross Scythes, Totley; Three Merry Lads, Lodge Moor (0114 327 2700); Wharncliffe Arms, Wharncliffe Side; and Tapton Hall, Sheffield, whose next lunch is on Monday 21 September. There is also a special Christmas Party on Wednesday 9 December, a lovely way to round off the year.
