A Sheffield son shares what Twelve Trees home care really looks like — for his mum, and for the family supporting her
When families start thinking about home care for a parent, the conversation tends to focus on the person receiving the care. Understandably so. But the reality of arranging and managing home care involves the whole family — the adult children coordinating visits, fielding updates, adjusting schedules, and trying to stay on top of a parent's changing needs from a distance.
What Stephen found, when his mother began receiving home care from our Sheffield team, was a service that worked for both.
Good home care is practical, warm, flexible, and well-coordinated. It should make life better for the person receiving it and more manageable for the family around them. Stephen's review tells us that's what his family found.
"We are extremely happy with the home care from Twelvetrees. The carers are always very friendly and helpful — they help mum with jobs in the house, fetch things she needs from the shops or simply have a friendly chat. Nothing is too much trouble. It always gives mum a lift seeing them. We have found the team organising the care at Twelvetrees to be excellent — friendly, understanding, warm and always quick to respond to any queries we may have. If I am visiting we can very easily pause the care — nothing is too much trouble. They also have an opportunity for visits to their day care facility at one of their care homes — mum is looking forward to taking advantage of this in the coming weeks. Overall we are extremely happy with Twelvetrees and the care mum is receiving from them."

It would be easy to underestimate the line "it always gives mum a lift seeing them." But for a family watching a parent navigate later life — with the inevitable reduction in social contact, reduced mobility, and the quiet loneliness that can accompany both — a carer who genuinely brightens someone's day is doing something that matters enormously.
Home care at its best isn't purely functional. Yes, there are tasks to complete — helping around the house, collecting shopping, managing medication. But the relational dimension of those visits, the familiar face arriving with warmth and genuine interest, is often what families value most. It's what they notice when it's done well, and what they miss when it isn't.
Stephen's description of carers who help with household jobs, run errands, and equally are happy to simply sit and have a conversation — that flexibility of purpose is deliberate. Different days bring different needs. Good carers read the room.
Something Stephen's review highlights that doesn't always get mentioned is the coordination team — the people at Twelve Trees who organise, schedule, and manage the care package from the office.
"We have found the team organising the care at Twelvetrees to be excellent — friendly, understanding, warm and always quick to respond to any queries we may have."
For families managing a parent's care, this is often where anxiety lives. The uncertainty about whether a query will be dealt with quickly. Whether a change of schedule will be handled without fuss. Whether someone will actually pick up the phone.
A responsive, approachable coordination team isn't a nice extra in home care — it's what makes the whole thing manageable for families who are often juggling significant pressures of their own. Stephen's experience reflects what we try consistently to deliver: a team that's as easy to deal with as the carers themselves.
One aspect of Stephen's review stands out as particularly worth highlighting for families doing their research:
"If I am visiting we can very easily pause the care — nothing is too much trouble."
This is something families often worry about when setting up a home care package — the rigidity of it. The sense that once a schedule is in place, it becomes difficult to change. That a son or daughter visiting for a weekend creates complications rather than being welcomed.
Our Sheffield home care service is designed to flex. When family is present and wants to be the primary support for a few days, pausing visits is straightforward. When needs increase, we scale accordingly. The care package serves the family — not the other way around.
Stephen also mentioned something that reflects the broader picture of what Twelve Trees offers:
"They also have an opportunity for visits to their day care facility at one of their care homes — mum is looking forward to taking advantage of this in the coming weeks."
This is one of the genuine advantages of choosing a care provider with both home care and residential care facilities. Home care and day care aren't separate, unconnected services — they work together.
Day care at our Sheffield care home in Nether Edge offers a structured day of activities, social engagement, a hot meal, and professional care support — returning home in the evening. For someone receiving regular home care visits, introducing day care one or two days a week can significantly increase social contact and provide a welcome change of environment.
Our visiting care service covers Sheffield's south and southwest postcodes — S7, S8, S10, S11, and S17 — including Nether Edge, Ecclesall, Dore, Fulwood, Ranmoor, Millhouses, and surrounding areas.
Practical support with household tasks and daily living, keeping your relative's home comfortable, safe, and well-maintained without them having to ask twice.
Fetching shopping, collecting prescriptions, and running errands — maintaining the small routines that make a real difference to independence and quality of life.
Personal care delivered with dignity and genuine warmth — including washing, dressing, grooming, and weekly personal care appointments such as hair washing and styling.
Medication prompts and management to ensure nothing is missed, providing families with the reassurance that health needs are properly supported every day.
Genuine conversation and interest in the person — carers who are as happy to sit and chat as they are to help with practical tasks, because both matter equally.
Care that adapts to your family's needs — including pausing visits when family is present, scaling up when needs increase, and adjusting without fuss when plans change.
Our visiting care service operates across Sheffield's south and southwest communities, including:
