Activities at Meadowbrook Care Home in September

Out and about

Our residents have enjoyed getting out and about over the last few weeks, making the most of the local area and the good company that comes with a proper day out. Getting beyond the four walls of the home and into the wider world is such an important part of life here, and it lifts the spirits, sparks conversation and gives everyone something to look forward to. One of the real highlights was a smashing lunch trip to Toby Carvery, where everyone tucked into a delicious meal and enjoyed a good natter around the table. There is something about a proper carvery that always goes down well, from the first look at a laden plate to the very last spoonful of pudding, and the warm, friendly atmosphere made it the perfect setting for a leisurely afternoon together.

Everyone made the most of a proper plateful, with plenty of trimmings and second helpings for those who fancied them. Meals out like these are about far more than the food, though. They give our residents the chance to enjoy the gentle buzz of a busy restaurant, to feel part of the wider community, and to savour the simple pleasure of choosing exactly what they fancy. Our carers were on hand throughout to make sure everyone was comfortable and well looked after, quietly taking care of the details so the whole group could simply relax and enjoy the occasion. It was a thoroughly sociable afternoon of good food, easy company and even better conversation, and the sort of outing that gives everyone plenty to chat about for days afterwards.

There was also a lovely relaxed afternoon at the local garden centre, a firm favourite with our residents and an outing we happily return to time and again. Everyone settled in over coffee and cake, browsed the plants and flowers, and enjoyed plenty of wonderful conversation in the calm, colourful surroundings. Garden centres make for a gentle, easy-going day out, with lots to see and no need to rush anywhere, which makes them ideal for a relaxed few hours away from the home. Between the greenery, the treats and the good company, it was exactly the sort of afternoon that leaves everyone feeling refreshed, content and ready for a well-earned rest back at Meadowbrook.

On another day, a few of us ventured onto the high street to try out a new coffee shop, chatting together over our drinks and soaking up the friendly local atmosphere. A trip to the local greengrocer also gave everyone the chance to pick out some lovely fresh fruit. It might sound like a small thing, but outings like this one carry real value. Choosing your own apples and bananas, handing over the money and taking home something you have picked yourself brings a welcome sense of everyday normality, independence and purpose. These little moments of ordinary life matter every bit as much as the bigger days out, and our residents clearly relished being part of the gentle bustle of the local shops once again.

Getting creative in the kitchen

Back at the home, residents rolled up their sleeves for some baking, decorating biscuits and buns with plenty of melted chocolate. It was as delicious as it was good fun, and more than a few sweet treats were happily sampled along the way. Baking sessions like these are a real favourite here, and for very good reason. There is the fun of getting hands-on and creative, the lovely aromas that fill the room, and the satisfaction of making something to share afterwards over a nice cup of tea. Activities like this also gently encourage movement, coordination and conversation, all wrapped up in an afternoon that feels like nothing more than a treat. Judging by the smiles and the chocolatey fingertips around the table, it was a resounding success.

Keeping active and having fun

Staying active is a big part of life at Meadowbrook, and keeping moving is so important for health, mobility and mood as we get older. Jody joined us again for our popular weekly exercise session, leading everyone through some gentle movements and helping the whole group get going while having a good laugh together. The sessions are designed so that everyone can join in at their own pace, whatever their level of mobility, and they always seem to end with plenty of smiles and a real sense of achievement.

There has been plenty of friendly competition too, with games of bingo, dominoes and cards keeping everyone entertained through the week. These games are about much more than a simple bit of fun. They help keep minds sharp, spark plenty of good-natured rivalry, and bring residents together around the table for a proper laugh and a chat. Bingo in particular always draws a crowd, and there is never any shortage of cheerful groans when someone else shouts house first. And no busy week here would be complete without a spot of pampering, so residents also enjoyed having their nails painted and being thoroughly spoilt, rounding things off with everyone feeling relaxed, refreshed and just a little bit glamorous.

Celebrations and entertainment

We were also delighted to celebrate a resident's birthday, always a special occasion here and a lovely excuse for a proper get-together, complete with cake, cards and plenty of warm well-wishes from friends both old and new.

There has been some fantastic entertainment as well. We welcomed the wonderful Alan back to sing for us, and residents thoroughly enjoyed joining in, singing along and even getting up for a dance. Live music always brings the home to life, and Alan's visits are eagerly anticipated every single time. Then on Friday came a real highlight of the month, a wonderful Frank Sinatra tribute here at Meadowbrook. The music was superb, the atmosphere was absolutely buzzing, and the old classics had everyone tapping their feet and humming along to songs they have loved for a lifetime. From the first number to the last, it made for a truly memorable afternoon of happy faces, warm nostalgia and much-loved familiar favourites.

It was wonderful to see so many residents up on their feet and dancing, with the whole room joining in on the old favourites. Whether up and moving or singing along from a comfy chair, everyone threw themselves into the occasion, and the smiles all around the room said it all. Afternoons like these, filled with music, movement and laughter, are exactly what life at Meadowbrook is all about, and the warm, happy glow they leave behind lingers long after the very last song has finished. Moments like this are a joy to be part of, both for our residents and for the whole team here.

Familiar songs and afternoons like these do far more than simply pass a happy few hours. For residents living with dementia in particular, well-loved music, a steady daily routine and plenty of good company can be wonderfully grounding and reassuring, often unlocking treasured memories and moments of genuine joy. It is one of the many reasons that meaningful activity and entertainment sit right at the heart of daily life here at Meadowbrook, week in and week out.
