We recently hosted a Friendship Lunch at the Cross Scythes in Totley, and what a lovely afternoon it was. A hot lunch, a warm and welcoming venue, a singer, a raffle and, best of all, plenty of good company.
Friendship Lunches are all about bringing people together. For many older people, a regular reason to get out, sit down with others and enjoy a meal can make a real difference to how the week feels.
Loneliness is one of the quieter challenges of later life. Friends move away, getting out becomes harder, and the days can grow long, especially as the evenings draw in over winter.

Something as simple as a shared lunch can help. It's a chance to chat, laugh, meet new people and catch up with familiar faces, in a relaxed setting where everyone is welcome.
The Cross Scythes in Totley made a lovely setting for the afternoon. Guests enjoyed a hot lunch together, followed by live music from our singer, which had plenty of people joining in.
The raffle added a bit of fun to finish, and there was lots of chatter and laughter around the tables throughout. Most of all, it was an afternoon of good company, which is what Friendship Lunches are all about.
A big thank you to the team at the Cross Scythes for looking after everyone so well, to our singer for the entertainment, and to everyone who came along and made it such a special afternoon.
Friendship Lunches run at venues across Sheffield, so there's often one happening nearby. Everyone is welcome, and they're dementia-friendly too, so nobody needs to worry about coming along.
You can find out more about the lunches and how to book in our earlier guide to Friendship Lunches in Sheffield.
For some people, the hardest part isn't the lunch itself but getting there, or feeling confident about walking in on your own. That's where we can help.
Companionship like this is a big part of our home care service in Sheffield. If you'd prefer company closer to home, day care at our Sheffield care home in Nether Edge also offers activities, good food and friendly faces every week.
Speak to Sarah Redfern or Casey Cotton in our home care team about upcoming lunches and support to attend.
